Interakt was always playing catch up yesterday, and never quite getting there, eventually finishing fourth. Chris is having a well earned weekend off, so it's a change of chair today, and a nigh on impossible afternoon's sport sees us head to the Queen's own track, and the…

3.45 Ascot

I wouldn't normally be interested in an eighteen runner cavalry charge down Ascot's straight seven furlong course. And, in truth, the reason for my interest is by a process of elimination and the difficulty/competitiveness of racing elsewhere.

So, what are the reasons to be optimistic about today's pick?

Well, firstly, his trainer, James Fanshawe is always a man to be respected, and particularly so at Ascot, where his record is seven winners from forty runners with 4yo+ types. He's won some nice Saturday handicaps at the track in recent times, too, and is in pretty good form currently, as a 50% win/place strike rate in the last fortnight attests.

He's going to war here with a horse called Primaeval. This chap has been in the first three on fourteen of his 22 starts, and won seven of them. His last seven races have earned him form figures of 2212110. That circle was in soft ground, and his career form on softer than good is 000, so it's easy to excuse that run.

The course will hold no fears after a second place in a field of... twenty-nine! Class is fine too: that big field effort was Class 2, the same as today, as was his win on his penultimate start.

So, big field: check. Class: check. Form: check. Going: check. Jockey: hmm...

George Baker gets the leg up for the first time this afternoon. He's not ridden the horse before, but he is a fine jockey and in good form. In point of fact, if you'd had a pound on all of George's runners in the last year, you'd have won £47.90. At SP! Or more like £120 at Betfair SP.

Primaeval tends to run close up with the pace as well, so we should be able to spot him early, and cheer him late. It's Fanshawe's only runner at Ascot, and he will of course be bidding for a notable across-the-card double with Society Rock in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup (which I think has a decent chance at a decent price).

9/1 BOG is available with William Hill only, and I think that's worth taking. I'll be going each way for the SotD unit. You can, as always, check the latest odds from the link below…
