Stat of the Day, 20th July 2019

Friday's pick was...

2.50 Nottingham : Queen of Kalahari @ 5/1 BOG 4th at 9/2 (Close up, ridden 2f out, stayed on towards finish

Saturday's pick runs in the...

2.45 Market Rasen :

Before I post the daily selection, just a quick reminder of how I operate the service. Generally, I'll identify and share the selection in the evening before the following day's race and I then add a detailed write-up later on that night/next morning.

Those happy to take the early price on trust can do so, whilst some might prefer to wait for my reasoning. As I fit the early service in around my family life, I can't give an exact timing on the posts, so I suggest you follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook for instant notifications of a published pick.

Who?

Global Tour @ 3/1 BOG

...in an 11-runner, Class 4, Handicap Hurdle for 3yo+ over 2m1f on Good ground worth £4549 to the winner...

Why?...

This 6 yr old gelding seems to have been revitalised since moving to Fergal O'Brien's yard, finishing 11131 in his five runs for his new handler, all over hurdles under today's jockey Max Kendrick over trips ranging from 2m to 2m4.5f, including 2 wins from 2 at Class 4.

His last run/win was just a week ago at Newton Abbot and his quick reappearance is no surprise as Fergal's runners sent back out 1-7 days after their last run are 7 from 20 (35% SR) for 7.75pts (+38.7% ROI) when sent off at odds shorter than 8/1 since the start of 2016.

Not admittedly the largest dataset I've brought you, but there are so many subsets at play today that this seems more than coincidental as from the 7/20 record, those horses are...

  • 6/18 (33.3%) for 3.18pts (+17.7%) from male runners
  • 6/14 (42.9%) for 9.61pts (+68.7%) over hurdles
  • 6/14 (42.9%) for 5.33pts (+38.1%) on ground quicker than good to soft
  • 6/11 (54.6%) for 13.42pts (+122%) at trips up to 2m5f
  • 5/11 (45.5%) for 12.91pts (+117.4%) in the second half of the calendar year
  • 5/10 (50%) for 13.91pts (+139.1%) at Class 4
  • 4/7 (57.1%) for 15.45pts (+220.7%) at 16-60 days since their second to last outing
  • 3/4 (75%) for 8.85pts (+206.3%) with 6 yr olds
  • and 2/2 (100%) for 1.83pts (+91.5%) with Max Kendrick in the saddle...

...enough, in my opinion, to warrant... a 1pt win bet on Global Tour @ 3/1 BOG as was widely available at 5.55pm on Friday, although SkyBet stood out with an extra third of a point, if you can get on there. To see what your preferred bookie is quoting...

If that's unclear, please ask!

Stat of the Day, 3rd April 2019

Tuesday's pick was...

4.45 Musselburgh : City Tour @ 4/1 BOG WON at 5/2 (Chased leaders on outside, went 2nd and hung right inside final furlong, ran on to lead towards finish op 3/1)

Wednesday's pick runs in the...

4.05 Market Rasen :

Before I post the daily selection, just a quick reminder of how I operate the service. Generally, I'll identify and share the selection in the evening before the following day's race and I then add a detailed write-up later on that night/next morning.

Who?

EarloftheCotswolds 6/1 BOG

...in an 11-runner, Class 3, Handicap Hurdle  for 4yo+ over 2m5f on Good ground worth £12996 to the winner...

Why?...

This 5 yr old gelding is the only course and distance winner on show here today, none of the other 10 rivals have won at this trip and only two have registered a victory on this track.

Our boy had a win and a place from 3 bumper runs and has since finished a very respectable 21512 over hurdles, only narrowly beaten LTO 34 days ago. He's by Axxos, whose hurdlers have won 7 of their 20 starts (35% SR) so far, whilst his trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies has a good record here at Market Rasen from a fairly small number of runners.

Since 2010, NTD's runners are 18 from 98 (18.4% SR) here for 20.4pts (+20.8% ROI) profit, from which...

  • males are 16/89 (18%) for 24.4pts (+27.4%)
  • those priced at 6/4 to 10/1 are 14/67 (20.9%) for 27.1pts (+40.4%)
  • those ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies are 10/51 (19.6%) for 3.1pts (+6.1%)
  • since 2015 : 9/44 (20.5%) for 14.3pts (+32.5%)
  • and at trips of 2m5f to 2m7f : 10/40 (25%) for 25.8pts (+64.5%)

...whilst from the above... Sam's record on males priced at 6/4 to 10/1 = 7/32 (21.9%) for 15.3pts (+47.9%), including...

  • at 2m5f to 2m7f : 3/13 (23.1%) for 8.38pts (+64.5%)
  • 2018/19 : 3/6 (50%) for 7.13pts (+118.8%)
  • and at 2m5f-2m7f in 2018/19 = 1/1 (100%) for 2.25pts (+225%) from EarloftheCotswolds' run here two starts ago!

More generally in UK NH Handicap Hurdle contests since 2013, horses with the CD icon next to their name on the racecard who either won or were a top 4 finisher within 2 lengths of the winner last time out are 274 from 1231 (22.3% SR) for 215.9pts (+17.5% ROI) backed blindly!

With today's race in mind, those 1231 runners can be filtered as follows...

  • males are 228/1016 (22.4%) for 193.5pts (+19.1%)
  • those last seen 11-60 days earlier are 200/914 (21.9%) for 182.1pts (+19.9%)
  • over trips of 2m1f to 3m : 170/695 (24.5%) for 272.1pts (+39.2%)
  • 5/6 yr olds are 129/457 (28.2%) for 109.3pts (+23.9%)
  • and at Class 3 : 85/317 (26.8%) for 199.6pts (+63%)

...and if you wanted a micro giving around 50 bets per year, then 5 to 11 yr old males racing over 2m1f to 3m at Class 3-5 some 11 to 60 days after their last run = 90 from 332 (27.1% SR) for 210.9pts (+63.5% ROI) and there's just one qualifier today...

...and that gives... a 1pt win bet on EarloftheCotswolds 6/1 BOG which was widely available at 6.00pm on Tuesday.  To see what your preferred bookie is quoting...

Stat of the Day, 17th January 2019

Wednesday's Pick was...

2.25 Lingfield :Kodiline @ 4/1 BOG 5th at 7/2 (Dwelt in rear, pushed along over 2f out, some headway entering final furlong, switched right inside final furlong, never nearer)

Thursday's pick runs in the...

2.05 Market Rasen :

Before I post the daily selection, just a quick reminder of how I operate the service. Generally, I'll identify and share the selection in the evening before the following day's race and I then add a detailed write-up later on that night/next morning.

Who?

Ontopoftheworld @ 3/1 BOG

...in a 9-runner, Class 3, 5yo+ Handicap Chase over 2m3½f on Good To Soft worth £7343 to the winner...

Why?

This 10 yr old appears all over my stats sheets for today's racing ticking lots of boxes as well as looking like having a great chance of yet another good run, so rather than bore you with all the data I've got in front of me, I'm going to briefly tell you a little about why I'm backing it broken down into horse/trainer/sire components.

The horse...

...is a 10 yr old gelding with 9 top 3 finishes from 11 starts (all in hcp chases, all wearing cheekpieces) since moving to Peter Bowen's yard, winning five times including a 17 length win in a 2-horse race LTO 10 days ago. Of that 5 from 11 record since switching homes, he is...

  • 5/9 after less than 3 weeks rest
  • 5/9 at odds of 6/1 or shorter
  • 5/9 for prizes of less than £9k
  • 2/6 at Class 3
  • and 2/3 under today's jockey Sean Bowen

Sean himself has a good record here at this track, but it is largely intertwined with the record of...

...today's trainer...

Peter Bowen, whose handicap chasers sent off at odds of 2/1 to 8/1 here at Market Rasen are 16 from 43 (37.2% SR) for 41.4pts (+96.3% ROI) since 2010, from which Class 3 runners are 6/17 (35.3%) for 11.94pts (+70.3%)

And more generally, Peter's handicap chasers who won LTO are 27 from 91 (29.7% SR) for 51.5pts (+56.6% ROI) since the start of 2015, with those returning from a rest of 5 weeks or less winning 26 of 81 (32.1%) for 58.7pts (+72.4%)

...and finally, the sire...

...is Desert King, whose offspring have won 19 of 95 (20% SR) handicap chases since the start of 2016, generating 54.2pts profit at an ROI of 57%, of which those racing 1 to 8 weeks after their run are 16/76 (21%) for 48.6pts (+63.9%), whilst Class 3 runners are 3/9 (33.3%) for 14.23pts (+158.1%)

...all pointing to a 1pt win bet on Ontopoftheworld @ 3/1 BOG as was offered by Betfair, Bet365 and Paddy Power at 5.20pm on Wednesday evening. To see what your preferred bookie is quoting...

Stat of the Day, 11th May 2018

Thursday's Runner was...

4.35 Chester : Ghostwatch @ 4/1 BOG 3rd at 15/8 (Tracked leaders, caught wide 8f out, pushed along and outpaced over 4f out, rallied on outside under pressure 2f out, went 3rd moderate inside final furlong)

2.40 Market Rasen :

Who?

The Blue Bomber @ 9/2 BOG

A 12-runner, Class 5,  2m1½f  Handicap Hurdle (4yo+) on good ground worth £3899 to the winner...

Why?

A poor looking race in all honesty with our pick's recent form sticking out like a sore thumb in a field of opponents without a win between them in the last 9+ months, whereas the penny has dropped of late for our boy (who is still only 6 yrs old), who has finished 212 since reverting back to shorter trips.

The win came here at Market Rasen over course and distance almost seven weeks ago in a Class 4 contest, so technically this should be an easier challenge, although that's not always the case!

Stat-wise, he's one of my "1234" horses where I back horses that won two starts ago (ie 1) and then finished 2nd. 3rd or 4th (ie 234) last time out less than three weeks ago. There are, of course, other rules/filters and these look far more complex in print that in actual usage, but are as follows...

  • UK NH Handicaps
  • 2013 to now
  • trips of 3.5 miles and shorter
  • OR of -2 to +11 from LTO
  • Class Move -2 to +2 from LTO
  • Distance Move -4.5f to +8.5f

These seem very broad and that's by design to gave a decent sample size of around 200 runners per year, which helps smooth out any anomalies/variance. Such criteria has actually generated 234 winners from 1112 (21% SR) runners for profits of 295.2pts (+26.6% ROI), from which...

  • males are 205/969 (21.2%) for 271.6pts (+28%)
  • off a mark within 2lbs of last run : 182/852 (21.4%) for 260.5pts (+30.6%)
  • runner-up LTO : 116/528 (22%) for 122.8pts (+23.3%)
  • on Good ground : 99/460 (21.5%) for 151.5pts (+32.9%)
  • and here at Market Rasen : 13/50 (26%) for 15.24pts (+30.5%)

Who?

Triopas @ 11/4 BOG

A Class 5, 3yo+ Handicap Hurdle over 2m7f on Good to Soft ground worth £3,249 to the winner...

And a 5 yr old gelding who arrives here in decent form having made the frame in each of his last three starts (313), typifying the kind of results trainer Tom Lacey has enjoyed himself of late, notching up 3 winners from 11 (27.3% SR) over the last fortnight with 2 winners from 8 over the past week.

Moreover, backing ALL Tom's runners over the last two years has been a successful/profitable venture with 43 winners from 221 (19.5% SR) producing very healthy profits of 187.8pts (+85% ROI). And whilst this on its own would be enough for some people to follow him blindly, others might prefer a more detailed approach. So, of those 221 runners, the following are applicable today...

  • males are 33/178 (18.5%) for 178.7pts (+100.4%)
  • hurdlers are 32/141 (22.7%) for 158.1pts (+112.2%)
  • during the October-January period : 26/114 (22.8%) for 186pts (+163.1%)
  • at trips of 2m3f to 3m1.5f : 25/101 (24.8%) for 103.8pts (+102.8%)
  • in handicaps : 20/86 (23.3%) for 53.8pts (+62.6%)
  • 5 yr olds are 15/86 (17.4%) for 103.9pts (+120.8%)
  • those finishing 2nd or 3rd LTO are 14/49 (28.6%) for 68pts (+138.8%)
  • less than 3 weeks since their last run : 13/49 (26.5%) for 83pts (+169.3%)
  • on Good to Soft ground : 7/45 (15.6%) for 66.4pts (+147.6%)
  • and at Class 5 : 10/44 (22.7%) for 38.8pts (+88.1%)

And those are just 10 possible angles you could take from Tom Lacey's runners, there are of course, many more...

Why?

Firstly an apology (thanks BT / SKY) for the tardiness of the write-up. Tech issues here in East Lancashire prevented me getting back online last night!

So, I'll keep it brief (but the research done was as usual!)...

A 6 yr old gelding racing over 2m5f on Good to Soft ground, trained by David Dennis.

Here is today's racecard

P.S. all P/L returns quoted in the stats are to Betfair SP, as (i) I NEVER bet to ISP and neither should you and (ii) although inferior to the BOG odds we secure, BFSP is the nearest approximation I can give, so I actually expect to beat the returns quoted.

Stat of the Day, 18th January 2017

Tuesday's Result :

3.30 Ayr : Plus Jamais @ 11/2 BOG 2nd at 7/2 Tracked leaders, every chance 2 out, kept on and just held close home, beaten by a head

Wednesday's pick goes in the...

2.10 Market Rasen

Before I post the daily selection, just a quick reminder of how I operate the service. Generally, I'll identify and share the selection in the evening before the following day's race and I then add a detailed write-up later on that night/next morning.

Those happy to take the early price on trust can do so, whilst some might prefer to wait for my reasoning. As I fit the early service in around my family life, I can't give an exact timing on the posts, so I suggest you follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook for instant notifications of a published pick.

Who?

Squeeze Me @ 7/2 BOG

Why?

This 10 yr old mare has won 2 of her last 6 outings and was a winner last time out, albeit getting on for 8 months since he just held on over 2m6.5f at Cartmel.

It's quite possible that she's in need of a run, but this is an easier task on paper, now racing against just her own sex and although her five rivals have all had the benefit of a recent run, none of them inspire confidence and between the five they share a collective record of 0 wins from 37.

Our runner, however, is 3 from 12 so far and 2 from 9 in handicap hurdles with a 2/3 record at 2m4f to 2m6.5f and she won on the only other occasion that today's jockey Brendan Powell was on board.

Her breeding is of interest to me, too, as she's by Grape Tree Road, whose offspring are 26/164 (15.9% SR) for 66.3pts (+40.4% ROI) in handicaps over the last two years, from which...

  • Class 4 = 12/87 (13.8%) for 57pts (+65.6%)
  • hurdles = 14/83 (16.9%) for 79.8pts (+96.1%)
  • females = 10/60 (16.7%) for 82.4pts (+137.3%)
  • 2m4f to 2m7f = 12/48 (25%) for 99.6pts (+207.5%)
  • 6 to 10 months off track = 3/13 (23.1%) for 25.5pts (+196.2%)
  • in female only races = 3/11 (27.3%) for 70.9pts (+644.2%)
