Stat of the Day: 26th June 2012

I felt Caramelita had a lot going for her yesterday, but the market disagreed as she drifted to 8/1 and could manage only seventh place.

6.45 Ballinrobe

Not many flat trainers of note at this County Mayo, western Ireland track. One of the few is David Marnane, who has won with four of his twenty runners at the track for a healthy level stakes profit.

Marnane is in excellent form just now, having narrowly missed out on a massive priced double at Royal Ascot. His Dandy Boy did win the Wokingham at odds of 33/1, and Jamesie just failed to make it a double in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at 16/1.

This evening, he runs dear old stick, Maal, who may be getting on a little now but does seem to retain ability.

Maal is nine years young, and most of his winning has been around this trip of nine furlongs (in fact, he's won six races between a mile and ten furlongs). He's won on going from soft to good to firm, and he's won off marks as high as 80 as recently as last summer.

He'll certainly get the former, and Maal has the services of former UK jockey, Fergal Lynch, who knows how to 'get the job done', so he ought to get the latter too. Indeed, all looks set for a good run tonight after a staying on fourth over a furlong shorter last time out.

Each way is the play. Maal is 10/1 BOG with bet365, but, as always, do…
