with Class 3 runners here at Ayr standing at 1/1, after today's pick, Shades of Midnight, won here on his last visit back in March 2016.

This horse comes with a set of stats behind to suggest this race is pretty close to the ideal one for him, for as to date, he is...

  • 5/12 @ 16-60 dslr, 5/10 during Jan-April, 3/8 @ 16-30 dslr, 2/4 at Class 3 (with both losers making the frame)

Who?

Sir Note 10/3 BOG

Why?

A fairly short and simple one for a change today!

A 7 yr old gelding with 6 wins from 13 races to his name, but more impressively since a switch to James Eustace's yard and being sent chasing with Jack Quinlan on his back, he's finished 11131!

He likes the supposed good ground, but I feel it'll deteriorate and that too will suit, as he's 2/2 on soft and goes well in small fields. He's also 4/4 going right handed. 2/2 after a break of 31-60 days and has 1 win and a place from 2 starts at Class 3 company.

He won a Class 3 handicap chase at Leicester last time out (59 days ago) by a good 5 lengths despite not having had a run for almost 29 weeks and this leads us to our stat...

...that tells us that male Class 3 chasers aged 6-9 yrs old who won a handicap chase by 2 to 10 lengths LTO 11 to 150 days ago are 159/765 (20.8% SR) for 167.4pts (+21.9% ROI) since 2008, with those who won by 5 to 10 lengths last time, scoring again on 93 of 405 (23%) occasions for profits of 156.4pts at an ROI of 38.6%, which is...

Who?

Steelriver 4/1 BOG

Why?

This 7 yr old gelding was 3rd LTO in a race that probably came too soon after running the day before, but now after a rest of some 47 days, he's expected to go better and reproduce the kind of form that has seen him win twice here in the past, once over course and distance.

He's going be ridden by Jamie Spencer who has a long-term (ie since 2009) 18% strike rate at this venue, courtesy of winning 84 of his 468 races here and since the start of 2012, he is 10/52 (19.2% SR) for 24.7pts (+47.5% ROI) in handicaps over 6 to 7 furlongs on this track.

Trainer David Barron has his horses in fine fettle at present with 3 winners and 2 placers from 10 over the last week and the Barron/Spencer partnership is 19/63 (30.2% SR) for 22.6pts (+35.8% ROI) since 2010, including...

  • over 5f to 7f : 18/51 (35.3%) for 29.3pts (+57.4%)
  • in handicaps : 11/38 (29%) for 22.9pts (+60.4%)
  • in handicaps over 5f to 7f : 11/29 (37.9%) for 31.9pts (+110.1%)
  • at Class 4 : 3/7 (42.9%) for 9.34pts (+133.4%)
  • and on the A/W : 5/14 (35.7%) for 9.4pts (+66.9%)

Steelriver is also David's only runner of the day and since 2008, his solo entrants are 113/628 (18% SR) for 225.1pts (+35.9% ROI), with the folowing at play today...

  • over 5f to 7f : 84/456 (18.4%) for 191pts (+41.9%)
  • on the A/W  : 54/237 (22.8%) for 104.9pts (+44.3%)
  • on the A/W over 5f to 7f : 42/182 (23.1%) for 91.6pts (+50.3%)
  • and those ridden by Jamie Spencer are 5/18 (27.8%) for 13.5pts (+75.1%)

...all of which points to...a 1pt win bet on Steelriver @ 4/1 BOG which was available with both Betfred, Hills and Totesport at 5.30pm on Tuesday, with plenty of acceptable 7/2 BOG on offer elsewhere. To see what your preferred bookie is offering, simply...

Who?

My Renaissance 11/4 BOG

Why?

Trainer Sam England is 8/29 (27.6% SR) for 7.34pts (+25.3% ROI) over the last two months and has a perfect two from two record here on the A/W at Southwell, thanks to today's runner My Renaissance, who has quite literally been reborn since a switch to Sam's yard and a drop back to racing over 1m4f/1m4.5f.

Since that move and subsequent drop back in trip from hurdling, this 7 yr old gelding has finished 21211 with those last two runs/wins coming over this course, distance and class under today's jockey taking his A/W record to 3 from 6 over 1m4f and 3/5 for Sam England. He's 2 from 2 this year and in his career he's 2/2 in February outings.

He's by Medicean, whose offspring were 33/163 (20.25% SR) for 76pts (+46.6% ROI) in A/W handicaps during 2016, including the following of note today...

  • over 7f to 1m7.5f : 32/130 (24.6%) for 102.7pts (+79%)
  • males were 32/126 (25.4%) for 106.7pts (+84.7%)

  • and here at Southwell : 3/18 (16.6%) for 21.1pts (+117.3%)

From the above, we can also find that males priced at 12/1 and shorter over trips of 7f to 15.5f were 30/85 (35.3% SR) for 99.3pts (+116.9% ROI), of which Class 6 runners won 11 of 33 (33.3%) for 34.4pts (+104.1%) and here at Southwell they were 2/8 (25%) for 4.72pts (+59%).

Who?

Spanish Fleet @ 10/3 BOG

Why?

A pretty simple one this time with a 9 yr old gelding in good form, knocking on the door with three successive runner-up finishes. Ran here at Kelso over 1f shorter LTO 32 days ago on heavy ground at a higher grade and was staying on well, so I'm confident the extra furlong allied to a drop in class will finally get him back over the line.

He's trained by George Bewley, whose chasers are 17/89 (19.1% SR) for 20.2pts (+22.7% ROI) since the start of 2014, with all 17 winners coming from 84 (20.2% SR) handicap contests for profits of 25.2pts at an ROI of 30%.

And, of those 84 handicappers...

  • males are 17/78 (21.8%) for 31.2pts (+40%)
  • those who ran in the last 90 days are 15/71 (21.1%) for 27.4pts (+38.6%)
  • those priced at 8/1 and shorter are 15/57 (26.3%) for 26.5pts (+46.5%)
  • on soft/heavy ground : 5/25 (20%) for 7.17pts (+28.7%)
  • those dropping down a grade are 6/20 (30%) for 21.5pts (+107.5%)
  • those ridden by Brian Hughes are 4/14 (28.6%) for 2.6pts (+18.6%)
  • and those up in trip by 1/1.5 furlongs are 5/9 (55/6%) for 22.4pts (+248.7%)

AND...males priced at 8/1 and shorter within 90 days of their last run are 13/46 (28.3% SR) for 26.7pts (+58% ROI)

Well, we've got a 3yr old John Gosden filly returning from a break of 72 days to be ridden by Nicky Mackay in a Class 5, 1m4f maiden and this interests me because...

...Mackay / Gosden / Kempton / odds below 9-2 = 15/37 (40.5% SR) for 12.95pts (+35% ROI), from which...

2.50 Wolverhampton :

Before I post the daily selection, just a quick reminder of how I operate the service. Generally, I'll identify and share the selection in the evening before the following day's race and I then add a detailed write-up later on that night/next morning.

Those happy to take the early price on trust can do so, whilst some might prefer to wait for my reasoning. As I fit the early service in around my family life, I can't give an exact timing on the posts, so I suggest you follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook for instant notifications of a published pick.
