No joy again yesterday, as George Baker gave Primaeval a bizarre ride. The horse pinged the gates, meaning he could have readily taken up his customary prominent position. But no, the rider pulled him back off a moderate early pace. When it came time to ride to win, Primaeval picked up quite well under what might be described as an 80% ride, but couldn't close the deficit ceded at the start. Sixth of eighteen, never nearer.

Society Rock of course did the bizzo up at Haydock.

Onwards, to Yorkshire…

4.00 York

A trainer very much on the wane overall, but still capable when he gets the material, is John Dunlop. And he loves a winner at York like Kevin Keegan would have loved to beat Manchester United all those years ago.

He sends just one animal up from Arundel today, and she ran her best race last time when winning over a mile and three quarters.

Today's two mile trip should be well within her compass, and stepping handicappers up in distance has always been a Dunlop trait. The lass in question this afternoon is Mafeteng, a four year old filly by Nayef out of a Hernando mare.

She had taken eleven races to get off the mark, but there are reasons to believe she can double up here. Firstly, her trainer has an excellent record at York: eleven wins from forty runners (28%) and a profit of 57 units.

Secondly, that win last time was when stepped up from a mile and a half for the first time. It was also on a track similar in constitution to York - Yarmouth - with a long sweeping home straight to allow Mafeteng to find her stride.

That win was in a lowly Class 5 maiden handicap, but this is little better. And it's only Mafeteng's third run on proper fast ground, where her form is 51.

She wouldn't be a strong fancy but Dunlop's record here gives her the nod.

It says a lot for the quality of these tips that one endures the disappointment of a hat-trick of 4ths safe in the knowledge that the next biggie is just around the corner.

Of course, the wiser ones among us would point out that the last three tips had no value (an in “joke” for anyone new who’s reading this), but I prefer to take the research of Matt and Chris at face value.

    Good job, chaps! Again.
