Stat of the Day, 7th April 2013

Another disappointing showing from Stat of the Day yesterday with Al Freej given every chance but unable to hold on to a place, eventually finishing fourth. In truth, SotD has had a shocking start to 2013, and our luck must change soon. Perhaps with a change of chair today, fortune will finally favour us. 3.50 Curragh

Thomas Carmody is a man making waves in Ireland. He's only been back training since last year, having retired in 2005 (when recording 100 runners without a win between 2003 and 2005). Clearly he wasn't getting the ammo, or else he was away picking up titbits of training gen in the interim, because since his return, he's fired in 21 winners from 121 runners, many of them for main owner Andrew Tinkler.

This combination pair up here with Greatest, an ex-Sir Michael Stoute horse who looks ready to take a fair step forward. Carmody's figures at the Curragh since returning are five winners from twenty runners (25%) and a profit of 19.75 units. With 4yo+ horses, he's two from eight for a +20 bottom line. Obviously, that's a small sample size but it points promisingly to today's nomination.

Having run modestly in three maidens last term, Greatest returned to the track this term in a Dundalk handicap. Sent off a 7/1 chance, he was never really put into the race, and found a bit of trouble as well. He's been dropped a solitary pound, from 69 to 68, for that, but he's far more likely to be seen in a better light on turf, and this 50-80 handicap looks perfectly winnable.

Johnny Murtagh takes the ride - he's the winningmost jockey at the course in recent times (69 winners) - and I'm hopeful both Carmody and Murtagh can add to their tally here. There's little sense shilly-shallying with an each way wager on this fellow, so it's all in to win, at 6/1 bet365 BOG.

As ever, be sure to make sure that's still the best price available, and...
