Stat of the Day, 18th July 2015
It was a case of close but no cigar for Chris on Friday, as 3/1 chance Zeshov was mowed down late by Hayley Turner and He's My Boy. First is first and second is nowhere in Stat of the Day land, so I (Matt, Chris has time off for good behaviour until Monday!) go chasing a Saturday star in the...
It's tricky fare wherever we turn on a typically fiendish Saturday's action. So I'm heading to Yorkshire, and demanding some meat on the bone courtesy of a pair of regular Saturday specialists, David O'Meara and Philip Makin.
I was surprised to learn that, according to my database at least, this dashing duo only got together in the Saturday context as recently as 26th May this year. Since then, they've combined on a dozen Saturday horses, four of them winners, and another two placing. Odds of 10/1, 6/1, 7/1 and 4/1 mean punters would have been 19 points in front at SP.
The last thirty days has brought further joy to the combination, with five winners from 15 runners, and a profit of 19.5 units. All good so far.
Looking longer term, and there is further cause for optimism from O'Meara's course record. In the past year, he's saddled 52 runners at Ripon, for eleven winners (21.15%) and 11.23 points profit. Looking at handicaps only, and that improves to 9/36 (25%) and +21.5.
The horse in question here is Thornaby Nash, a lightly raced four-year-old with just ten starts to his name. He missed all of last year, but proved a win on his final juvenile start was no fluke by adding another victory and two second places to his CV already in five runs this term.
Since stepping up to a mile, he's finished 512, Making having piloted the 12 element. A hold up horse, Thornaby Nash needs some pace to shoot at, and he looks like getting that with four last day pace-pushers in the field. On a trappy Saturday, I felt that the 6/1 general, win only, was worth a chance.
