Stat of the Day, 15th December 2012

Midnight Chase was a very late non-runner yesterday, on ground that went from good to soft before the first race, to heavy after it. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the official going descriptions at Cheltenham are an ongoing embarrassment for the sport. I don't mind saying that I lost a few quid yesterday in my placepot perms on horses that would like good to soft but hated heavy. That shouldn't be the case for any punter and, whilst I ought to have paid closer attention to the weather, that going description should have changed BEFORE the first race. Rant over, and on with the show.

We're up to Donny for an early start today, and the…

11.55 Doncaster

The first sighting of good ground for a month or so here, and in the opening race of the day, we have a trainer with a positively electric record at the track. James Ewart has a 39% strike rate here, with seven of his eighteen runners winning.

Indeed, since November last year, Ewart's record at the track reads 11152131613671. Stupendous stuff for a trainer in the League One ranks, despite his generally upwardly mobile profile.

Today's sole runner looks to have plenty on against some big guns from the Southern yards, but that's been the case on a number of those other winning occasions too.

Zaru is the beast in focus for SotD readers, and he's making his debut over fences in a beginners' chase against eleven rivals. Zaru ran some nice races, though generally getting outpaced, over two miles and hurdles last term, eventually winning a maiden hurdle on his final start. But he's bred for this more significant test of stamina: fences and an extra half mile or thereabouts.

Ewart can ready one after a break, so the fact that Zaru is having his first run for 261 days is not overly concerning. And, despite the size of the field, this isn't the toughest beginners' chase ever, with none of the horses rated higher than 125 over hurdles (Zaru was rated 115).

In truth, it's a race where the trainer stat is carrying all before it and, in a competitive enough heat, Zaru has his chance - each way - at 16/1 best odds guaranteed with the excellent BetVictor, that's the wager today.

If your Cheltenham ante-post bet doesn't run, they'll give you a free bet to use at the Festival to the same value. Great offer, in my opinion).

Matt you mention no horse has a o/r rating of over 125 over hurdles this race is a chase and i cant see what referance that has to the said race when Sir Frank o/r is 127 over chases and as you will be aware there is a big difference beteen the said races and not only 2foot.

pth, with respect, obviously I know/knew that. When there are no ratings for the vast majority of runners, it is instructive to use hurdle ratings as a ballpark barometer.

Zaru unfortunately jumped poorly, eventually finishing sixth of the twelve runners, outrunning his market rank, but not by enough to pay us out.

      Best,
      Matt

    Hi Matt

Re ‘great’ bookmaker – VC …… Great offer for Ante Post for sure … But a bookmaker should only be considered ‘great’ if they stand your bets at the price they offer without knocking you back to a minor stake after referring your bet to ‘traders’ ( the name of which is a disgrace to traders the world over .

VC isn’t the worst but isn’t the best , and they are almost as spineless an accountant as Hills Ladbrokes and the worst of the lot – plastic bookmaker paddy power who is an out and out coward!!!

Great marketieer but a complete charlatan to call his operation a bookmaker .

Oh and don’t start me on that bald clown Fred Done … What a welcher and total non bookmaker

As to the best for taking a bet and who don’t welch or knock you back – BET365

And I don’t say that because I’m losing with them ( unlike poss some others whom I have – yet still knock me back ) .. I’ve withdrawn over £8000 of profits this month from 365 without an issue of getting ongoing stakes on

They are great – VC and most others are most certainly not !!

I have to agree with you johnny5 about BET365 and as for VC they closed my account one month after opening it as I hit them for a massive £200. That’s not a typo they are just jokers

Victor closed me down too … for winning around €200. You have to wonder about the morality of such companies – business motto is apparently “We’ll only take your business on condition that the money flows in, never if it flows out”. Tossers.
